DHV: 1463 Tourin ID: Size: Pardessus Place Made: Maker: F Paris François Gavinies Date: 1749 Label Text: GAVINIE’S, rue Saint / Thomas du Louvre, / A PARIS, 1749 [printed except 49; sic with apostrophe instead of accent] Body Shape: Viol Current Location: F Paris No. of Strings: 6+5 ? Collection: Musée de la musique Sound Holes: C Catalog Number: E.2474 Head: Scroll Private Owner: Previous Owner: Measurements: Body Length: 34.6 String Length: 32? Rib Depth: 5.5 Upper Width: 17 Middle Width: 12.2 Bottom Width: 20.8 Information Source: TGM visit 8/11; museum’s website Literature: Photographs: On museum’s website (FB+S, head side); [by TGM: table inside and out, back inside and out (all body only), bottom ribs, neck and pegbox F+S, head back, label (color)] Recordings: Auctions: Comments: When seen, top was off and neck not attached to body. Pegbox open in back (2 rectangular windows) with 11 sets of holes (6 pegs treble, 5 bass side, all same size), La Fille-style decoration, and outward points midway; integral with neck and open scroll (with carved flower at eyes), so all probably original: viola d’amore? Metal rod between pegbox walls, purpose unknown; currently divides lower 6 from upper 5 pegs, but previously located closer to nut, giving 4+7 (violon d’amour? or perhaps irrelevant). All strings apparently meant to pass through individual holes in an ivory bar just beyond the saddle and attach to hitchpins in an ivory plate fastened to bottom rib; no bridge, fingerboard, or tailpiece seen; no evidence of tailgut/button, though may once have had a hookbar. Interior linings mostly cloth; those between back and ribs seem to be twisted or braided, but between table and ribs are thin wood.

Kraft drawing seen 9/02 Literature: Photographs: [Unpublished, from J. Kraft 5/13: F+S, head F+S and 3/4, back at an angle, bottom rib and table arching, neck side (color)] Recordings: Auctions: Comments: Dimensions from drawing, so not over arching. Has original fingerboard, tailpiece, and nut; 2-piece back. Serious worm damage, especially to pegbox, means it can’t be tuned up. Photos of pegbox (seen but not copied) show plain sides, front edges, and back below hair; man’s head has moustache and perhaps a crown (very unlike Paris museum treble). Repaired/restored by a certain Monsieur Vian for owner’s great-grandmother, and used in her ensemble “Vielle France”.

Found as a cello, changed to viol by John Topham at owner’s request, 2001 (new neck, pegbox, and fittings). Dendrochronology shows youngest tree rings on table are from 1662 and 1665, using wood from same tree as two [other] viols by Lewis; this instrument perhaps made 10-20 years later. When bought, had false label “Maggini fecit in Brescia 164...” and repair label “Repaired by J.W. Hinchcliffe / 9, Stoke Road, Plymouth”, both now removed.
