Here's an unusual 7-string! Beautifully made instrument with fruitwood and maple striped back. Decorative purfling in the style of Henry Jaye. 70.5 cm string length. Unable to decipher label: "Hideii (?) fecit in Certidijon (?), 1977." Comes with Marais-style long bow (maker unknown), and a gigbag. Low A and D speak very well, and this feels like a much more expensive instrument (but without clarification of the label, it is priced low). Will split the shipping with buyer.

Quinton For Sale made by Roger Rose (UK) in 2016 after Salomon, 1753, with a case. FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING. Audio clips available upon request.

A quinton is a violin shaped viol, with same range and size as a pardessus de viole. I commissioned this instrument in 2016 and it has more recently been played by Peter Wendland in concerts.

Tuned in 5th and a 4th GDADG, historically, the quinton was played by viol players in the 18th century who wanted to play violin music without having to change technique and learn the violin. It was played up until the French Revolution.

The 18th century composer, Michelle Corrette said of the Quinton: “The quinton has a delightful sound because it possesses the fluted high register of the pardessus de viole and the sonorous bass register of the violin – it sounds much better than an ordinary pardessus, the table being less loaded with strings.”

Six string bass viol made in 2023 by Marco Salerno. On the larger side but with a mellow tone. Instrument is great for early consort music, continuo and solo rep. I have dropped the bridge to make the string length longer but still have the original bridge if you want to move it back. New bridge is a Stradivarius model viol bridge.
It will come with a custom semi-rigid case and I can provide an inexpensive bow.

Wolfgang Uebel 1976 viola da gamba for sale. The instrument is well taken care of and in great condition. Restrung as of 10/2024 and plays smoothly. The new strings are from Gabriela's Baroque and the instrument was restrung by Sarah Peck in Philadelphia, PA. Was owned by an avid player who was a member of the Greater NY Viola da Gamba Society. The instrument is being sold by her granddaughter, Hannah, who was left the instrument when she passed.

This is a nice light bow with a bit of extra length (60 grams, 79.5 cm), probably from the '80s. It has lovely fluted carving along the stick and is very stable and easy to manage. While suitable for a variety of situations, it would be especially good for an intermediate player interested in baroque repertoire. I bought it a little over a year ago from Scott Smith Violins in Seattle for $1300.

It’s stamped “J & M.D.,” which refers to Jeanne and Marguerite Dolmetsch, twin granddaughters of Arnold Dolmetsch. According to a 1982 ad for their UK-based shop, Gerald Mitchell made their bows, and a stamp hidden under the frog, “M 93,” probably means it was the 93rd bow made for them by him. I’m happy to email pictures and more documentation, as well as to ship the bow.

A bass viol after  Richard Meares 1660 made by Lu-Mi in 2005.  Instrument is in excellent condition with new strings.  This model is regarded as the best all-around viol, well suited for a wide variety of repertoire.  
The plain model features good-quality, aged wood, a matte finish, and minimal decorative purfling around the edges of the instrument. The fingerboard and tailpiece are solid, plain maple and the pegs are rosewood.
The instrument comes with a flight case and bow.  Case carries a motto: "Ceci n'est pas un violoncelle".  I'd like to see this placed by end of September '24, so please come and check it out !

Bass viol/Baroque cello bow stamped H. F. Grabenstein above the frog. Corresponds most closely with "Baroque Cello, Slovik model" on the Grabenstein website. The shaft of the bow is of unfigured dark wood, hexagonal throughout. The frog is of the same wood. The turned button is of lighter figured wood. Overall length is 74 cm. In perfect condition throughout, newly re-haired. The bow will be at 2024 Conclave if not already sold.

A 7-string bass viol by Martin J. Hilsden, #37, London, 1979, bearing an original label. The top is two pieces of quartered spruce, of medium grain at the center, widening in width at the bouts. The back is two pieces of quartered maple. The medium width figure is horizontal to the center joint. The ribs are a similar maple to the back. The maple neck terminates in a flora ornamented pegbox and a carved female head. The varnish is a golden orange-brown. The viol is in healthy and playable condition with one repaired crack on the top plate by the tailpiece on the bass side. The maker recently assessed the 2024 fair market value to be €20,000 (about $22,000), however, I am offering it for $12,000.

It comes with a hard case and the option of buying a bow by Louis Bégin for $2,000.

2015 Charlie Ogle 6-string Bass. Well love and played in, I am selling because I've ended up with two.

In excellent condition, the usual few superficial nicks here and there in the varnish. Good low action. No wolf notes. Strung with Pirastro strings. Gorgeous flamed maple body.

The deluxe model is made with select wood, has a bent (rather than carved) top, ebony fingerboard and tailpiece, double purfling on the front and back, purfled ornements on the back, purfled borders on the pegbox.

Made by and purchased from Richard Wilson, Cambridge England, in 2006 for $2,000. Excellent condition, lightly used. Stick is of pernambuco and frog and button of mastodon ivory. Stick plus button is 29". Hair length is 23.5".

7 string bass viol by Dietrich Kessler, No 80, 1965. English body, (possibly after Barak Norman) and French neck.
The string length is 70.5 cm but is easy to play as the stopping distance is low and the strings are close together. This viol was made for Jane Ryan, Dietrich Kessler’s wife. The ribs are deep at 14.2 cm and lower bout measurement at the rib is 38.5cm. It is a large instrument and makes an excellent continuo sound. It also has great projection and has been used it for playing gamba concertos.

This instrument could be delivered to the buyer in Oberlin, OH, April 20-22 2024 free of charge.

It has a 67cm string length and comes with a snakewood bow and soft-shell case. It was purchased in 2020, sounds fantastic, and has planetary gears installed. This is a wonderful starter instrument for an aspiring violist and is priced with that in mind. I can't physically play it anymore due to disability, sigh.

2020 Charlie Ogle 7 String, John Rose Model, Ashmolean Festooned Bass Viola da Gamba with Hill mechanical pegs, soft case, in new condition. I will bring this viol to the 2023 Conclave.

The gamba is labeled "Sidney Greenstien, maker of fine instruments #3 1980" The back is made of Big Leaf Maple and the front is fine grained spruce, the fingerboard Pale rosewood. A brazil wood bow is included. There is a handmade wooden case of mahogany.

Treble viol by Linda Shortridge 1990. Vibrating string length 37cm. Includes bow, also by Shortridge, 69cm. Also includes new soft case.

Made by Arnold Dolmetsch Workshop. No. 901 (date unreadable on label). Vibrating string length 66.5 cm. Includes bow made by Linda Shortridge (length 77 cm). Also includes new soft case.

The table of two-piece spruce cut on the quarter bears a medium to wide grain. The back of maple is two pieces cut on 45° bears a highly flamed straight horizontal figure with geometric purfling design running along the center of the instrument. The ribs are of high flamed maple
cut on 45°. The original maple neck is terminated in a peg-box and open scroll with a half
volute. The varnish is of transparent orange color on a yellow ground.
Soft and hard case included.

Wolfgang Uebel, Celle, 1975. New frets and strings, including a bow by H.F. Grabenstein and a decent case. It's smallish, string length 64.5 cm, with a lions head and some carving at the base of the neck. In pristine condition. It will be at 2023 Conclave as a loaner.

Bow for tenor viola da gamba by Arthur R Bultitude, bearing his brand-stamp, circa 1962. In excellent condition. The fluted ironwood stick terminates in a modified pike head. The open-face ivory frog is accompanied by an ornamental ivory button. Weight: 66.5 grams.
