DHV: 1297 Tourin ID: Size: Bass Place Made: Maker: GB London Thomas Cole Date: 1674 Label Text: Thomas Cole, near Fetter-lane / in Holborn, London, 1674 [printed, including final digits] Body Shape: Viol Current Location: GB London No. of Strings: 6 Collection: Private Collection Sound Holes: C Catalog Number: Head: Lion Private Owner: Yes Previous Owner: Edith Lake, London, -c. 1970 Measurements: Body Length: 64.7 String Length: 65.4 Rib Depth: 11 Upper Width: 29.3 Middle Width: 21.5 Bottom Width: 37.5 Information Source: TGM visit 10/01 Literature: MacCracken 2016, p. 189 Photographs: [By TGM: FB+S, head front, back 3/4 (color)] Recordings: Auctions: Comments: Table seems to be 2-piece (with wing for lower bass bout, at least), with double purfling. Back probably doesn’t belong to rest: has scratched-and-inked purfling and arabesque designs, and no soundpost plate (label is glued diagonally directly onto back). Shoulders have been reshaped on both table and back, by adding as much as 2 cm of width on each side. Lion head also unlikely to be original: very ornate, high-profile carving, with 2 fangs and luxuriant mane. Bridge placed above middle of C’s when seen. Repair label: “reparée / par Jean-Petit luthier / à Besançon an 1834,” glued next to Cole label.

Poor condition, with worm damage, cracks, abraded edges of table, etc. Miller 1994: lower two-thirds of body is intact and unmodified; so nearly identical to 1611 Amati bass at Ashmolean that they must have been built from the same mold and pattern. Scroll by Grancino (C. Beare to Smithsonian, 1989). Came to Smithsonian in 1965, but ownership not transferred until 1991. Chiesa 2002: back arching is slight and quite different from that on Amati cellos. (Top off when seen again 3/24)
