2-piece table with small fleur-de-lys ornament; 2-piece back with central bas-relief carving of heart pierced by 2 arrows, with diamond pattern designs at bottom, below fold, and at neck heel; both with double purfling. Relief carving on back of pegbox shows minstrel playing a long-necked lute, underneath an urn filled with flowers; carved head is human male from front, lion from above. E. Potash to TGM, 9/86: bought from Leonhardt in early/mid 1980s. Neck, fingerboard and tailpiece not original; maybe done in late 1960s by Hans [recte Paul] Gerhard Schmidt, Amsterdam, whose stamp appears on back of fingerboard; restored “1985 / Paul Biase / New York,” who signed large patch of new wood on lower treble side of back. G. Leonhardt to TGM, 10/08: “My father bought it for me from the firm of Max Möller in Amsterdam. It may have been during the war, or just after. The fingerboard had been ... narrowed and shortened, but P.G. Schmidt in Amsterdam ... made an entirely new neck and fingerboard, the latter’s inlay copied from the old cut-down one,” and a new tailpiece to match.
