Comments:

Bridewell 1930 gave label date as 1598; Pringle 1978 assumed that was a different instrument from Mme de Chambure’s of 1595. Gétreau 1996 says date 1604 on p. 735, but 1595 on p. 362; museum’s website gives 1604. Fleming 2001: 2-piece table, double purfling front and back. (Personal communication, 10/01: label very difficult to read; he has compared 1930 photos with Paris instrument and believes they are identical.) Drescher 1990: Baßgambe (error). On display 8/02: ribs also have double purfling but table and pegbox are plain; C holes very vertical and placed entirely above lower corners. Topham 2003: youngest growth ring is 1587 on bass side, 1589 on treble, both probably from same tree. Dimensions on museum website: 53.8, 25.5/18.1/31.6, 11.2, -.
