Comments:
(Presumably 2nd of 2 anon. trebles noted by Bevan.) Waterhouse 1998/2010: “Fantasy violin/viol instrument, ?Germany, mid 19c ... with proportions larger than that of treble [viol] ...; with projecting corners as in violin but sloping shoulders and flush ribs as in viol.” Dimensions are from back: flat, 1-piece, with fold not quite perpendicular to axis; table 2-piece with rosette, fairly high arching; ribs shallow (rib height probably includes thickness of table and back); head, neck, pegs modern; bridge by Hills. Varnish worn as if from playing on shoulder. 1980 repairs by Marcus Bennett, Lancaster. TGM: single purfling on front, inked on back; bridge not seen; table length 37.6. Likely originally a viola d’amore, and by Dörffel as labeled: cf. photo of Leipzig 837 (6+6).
