Gardiner Houlgate 2014/05/12, lot 140

Young 1980: pardessus; maker not listed in any of the standard books. Rosette; slight fold in lower bout. Dimensions 63.6, -, 17.5/12.5/20.2, 7.5, -. Gardiner Houlgate 2014: “Fine early 18th century five string Pardessus de viole by and labelled Pierre Morant, Fait Caen, 1709 [sic], with highly figured birds eye and burr maple back and sides, the spruce table of a broad width grain, pierced with a rosette sound hole withiin geometric purfled and inked foliate design, the later neck and peg box carved with the head of St Cecilia, length of back 36.8 cm”; in 1980, owned by Dick Fratki, president of Ward Music, Ltd. in Vancouver. In 1958, 1980, and 2014 photos, set up as 5-string pardessus (2 pegs treble, 3 bass side); in 2014, restored by J. Pringle for G. Trimble as a 6-string treble, replacing neck (with FB+TP) by Hills and pegbox/head by La Fille. Pringle to TGM, 9/14: 3-piece table with single purfling, 2-piece back with 2 inked lines and second fold in lower bout (old but not original). New pegbox with carved back (after CALD 7) and female head (after Bertrand); original neck was integral with top block.
