In 1978 was being restored by Michael Goater; had been converted to cello; fingerboard and tailpiece not original; strip of darker wood visible along center of back. May be same viol described in C. Stainer, Dictionary of Violin Makers, p. 79, and also listed in Taphouse1905 (estate auction catalogue) as “Viola da Gamba, German, carved head, by Johann Henrich Rappert, Erfurt, 1719.” In 2009, Christian Brosse wrote that only the back and parts of the ribs are original and he regretted not having replaced the non-original table; also said it was privately owned in Neckargemünd, but owner’s identity deduced by TGM from VdG-G membership list. [Dimensions shown here were sent to Tourin and listed by him for ANON 2 (upper width is at corners, not necessarily the widest point); dimensions sent to G. Lyman (originally listed by Tourin under WILL 1) were in inches and convert to 69.9, 30.5/-/38.1, 11.9. (Handwriting of two letters matches.)]
