Comments:
Unusually deep ribs, square shoulders, but unpointed body corners and hookbar. Perhaps a composite, with table from a viola d’amore but newer ribs and back (the latter rather crudely made and in 2 pieces divided horizontally at the widest point, possibly the result of undoing a second fold in the lower bout?). Head carved by Nathalie Dolmetsch. Played in the English Consort of Viols in the 1950s, initially as an alto tuned in C but later as a tenor in G. Restored by Dietrich Kessler in the 1960s. Per owner, “It was always referred to by Marco Pallis as the German instrument.” (Tourin thought perhaps modern.)
