Beuting 2007: dendrochronology gives date of 1537 for the youngest growth ring on table. Carter 2006: “in remarkably clean and seemingly intact condition”; soundpost, its plate, and bass bar not original. Appearance more modern than C71 (by F. Linarol): no forward-sloping shoulders, greater neck angle, and table arching more typical of 17th century; but details of neck and pegbox are similar. Estimated SL 106-110 (“perfect for a G/A tuning”). Dendrochronological dating of table: 1581 [but see above]. Moens 1986: table slightly cut down, probably from an 18th-C. Bohemian [contra]bass; ribs and back don’t belong together; neck, fingerboard, and pegbox created for this combination; same purfling on old and newer parts, so not original to either. Edmunds 1980 dimensions 100.0, 49.5-/-58.0, 20.0, 106-110 (Edmunds 1994: SL 108). Baines 1966: nearly original condition; body length 100. Schlosser 1920: inlaid fingerboard and tailpiece. Witten 1975, p. 43: “the latest extant and the only known instrument signed by Ventura at Padua”; SHRIN 1, though smaller, is “virtually identical in every detail including the wood.” Stradner 2002: Benavides collection begun by Marco (d. 1582), inherited by his nephew Pietro, then by Pietro’s son Claudio, grandson Gaspare, and great-grandson Andrea (d. 1711). Bow SAM 86 probably belongs to this viol.
