Comments:
Sharply sloping shoulders, table smaller than back in upper bout. Hopfner 2006: body outline and neck setting and length original. Hopfner 2008: dendro date by P. Klein (1988) was 1602, but now revised to 1433 by M. Beuting (2007). Restored in 1910 by Alfred Coletti (with his label dated 1912; not by Karl Haudek, c. 1901), including new back and ribs with veneer of bird’s-eye maple; table is bent, with middle section carved and non-original purfling. Carter 2006: back (of “spectacular burr maple”) not original, soundpost and bass bar likewise, but museum considers neck to be original. Estimated SL 80-84. Moens 1989: earliest possible date for table is 1607 (based on dendrochronology [by P. Klein]). Back and ribs “younger”; neck probably not original. Edmunds 1994: table 2-piece, carved, then bent; tailpiece hooks onto screw-eye, probably original. Wood very similar to C76—probably part of same set. Thorby 2018: label not original. Woodfield 1984, p. 130 and Hopfner 2008 call this a large bass. Edmunds 1980 dimensions 70, 36.5/-/40.0, 14.8, 80-84. Schlosser 1920: scroll seems not original.
