Hellwig 2011, TieWV 164; Hellwig 1980, no. 135. 2-piece table with ebony/ivory edging, single purfling, and (ivory) rosette; arched back and ribs of (unvarnished) palisander: back with a wider central strip and three narrower on each side (the outermost divided by the C bouts) separated by wide ivory stripes, all extensively decorated with inlaid ivory scenes. Scroll and tuning machines (by Baker, London) from second quarter of 19th century; pegbox, neck, fingerboard, and tailpiece veneered with tortoiseshell with ebony/ivory decorations; 13 frets tied on neck, going past the heel; dimensions: 67.0, 30.3/22.3/37.5, 12.0, -. Fingerboard and tailpiece with marquetry of ivory and tortoiseshell, plus some mother of pearl. In ink on underside of tailpiece: “John Cawse 1835” (a painter, 1779–1862). Baines 1968 dimensions 67.5, 30.3/22.5/35.5, 13.5, 67.5? Hellwig 2011 adds: back widths 30.3/22.5/37.3; inlay of upper half of fingerboard corresponds to theorbo TieWV 162, dated 1718; this instrument advertised for sale in Cramer’s Magazin der Musik 11/1783 (extensive description quoted p. 45 [also Holman 2010, p. 196], including mention of ivory angel head and pegs).Holman adds: perhaps bought by C.F. Abel and brought to England by him; p. 292 and pl. 21: depicted in Cawse’ s painting “On her Spanish Guitar she Played a Ditty...”; played by Richard Hatton in a Concert of Ancient Music on 4/17/1845.
