3-piece table with painted purfling, 2-piece back; cut down from a small tenor. Poorly carved head; modern fingerboard and tailpiece. On display 10/01: label said “alto viol, English c. 1660” and noted that fingerboard and tailpiece added c. 1963; shallow ribs and rounded shoulders. Baines 1968: “Alto viol. English; late seventeenth century”; body cut down at shoulders; poorly carved head with long hair.
