Comments:
Baines 1968: 1-piece table (?) with painted purfling both front and back. Tailpiece probably later; “fingerboard of a wood like pear, with painted lines.” 4 pegs treble, 3 bass side, quite crowded in pegbox. On display 10/01: Upper two corners slightly pointed, lower two more so. Fingerboard inlaid with diamond pattern for whole length, with horizontal lines simulating frets (but not properly spaced). Despite quite narrow string spacing at both nut and bridge, both I and VII are now at extreme edges of fingerboard. Tail gut seemingly original. Fleming 8/10 (pvt. comm.): “well constructed, [by] someone experienced in such work, no impression of a violin-maker feeling his way.” Latest dated English bass, except for Gilkes 1812, 1815 and 1826, Howell 1839, Saint George 1895 (and one or two others by St. George?). (Engel 1874, 1876: “probably Italian”; 1876: Gillott collection sold at auction in 1872, including “two viola da gambas, by Gaspar di Salo and Barak Norman”; former very likely to be this instrument.)
