Comments:

Christie’s 2009/10/13, lot 166

Wide purfling on table; none on back. String length 30.1 in 1992, but 31.3 in 2013. Lachmann 1950 calls it a “treble viola da braccio” and gives tuning for dessus rather than pardessus de viole, despite noting the instrument’s “great resemblance to the pardessus by Guersan” pictured alongside it. “The varnish is original ... and the whole instrument is in fine, unaltered condition.” UCLA dimensions 32.0, 15.5/10.7/18.25, 5.5, 30.0. Tourin dimensions 59.1, 33.7, 14.9/--/18.4, 5.6, - (converted from Lachmann’s inches); Christie’s: “viola da braccio”; length of back 30.5; photo shows 8 frets, peg pip missing on string III, and an alternative set of notches in the nut for 5 strings.
