Comments:
Hellwig 2011, TieWV 160; Hellwig 1980, no. 133. 2-piece table with maple edging (originally probably ivory) and double purfling; 2-piece back (arched). Head of birch from Tielke’s workshop, slightly larger than his own; pegbox somewhat crudely executed; 7th peg not original; neck has been narrowed [for use as a cello], later widened for 7 strings; inlaid fingerboard (tortoiseshell on ivory veneer), now missing three plaques; tailpiece similar but retains two plaques in mother of pearl, stylistically datable to after 1740s. Inscription under bottom end of fingerboard: Repariert. von. / G.P. ALTHENN. IN. / Fr.:FURTH.AM.MAIN / 1756. Dimensions -, 31.0/22.5/37.8, 11.5, -. Hellwig 2011 adds: no purfling on back; 2 rows of holes in tailpiece (for 6, then 7 strings); woman’s head in late style (2nd example, after TieWV 152 = 1707). Back widths 30.2/22.4/37.3. GH’s dating based on belief that 3-cornered hat worn by figures in tailpiece medallions first seen in 1740s, but in fact it was already known during active period of Tielke’s shop.
