Hellwig 2011, TieWV 055; Hellwig 1980, no. 069. Unique body, made for someone with a wooden left leg. 2-piece table with double purfling (and rosette in bass-side bottom extension); soundholes altered. 2-piece back (flat with fold); both with overhanging edges now, but perhaps not originally; shape of body shoulders altered. Converted to cello, with 4 bowed and 3 sympathetic strings. Unique, tripartite pegbox; peg nearest head not original. Neck has been narrowed and shortened; non-original lower part, of beech, is integral with top block; fingerboard and tailpiece not original. Date 1695. Dimensions 70.5, 27.0/21.2/35.3, 12.0, -. Hellwig 2011 adds: date 1689 (third digit unclear); only upper part of neck, plus pegbox and head, by Tielke. Pegbox has bipartite lower half for 4 pegs plus upper half for 3 more (2 treble, 1 bass side). Tailpiece with sculpted edges and 3 cutouts, similar to viola d’amore TieWV 58; originally with 6 holes, now 4 new ones. Body widths non-standard due to outline; on back 21.2/33.5/35.2; front with calipers 21.2/33.3/35.3. Body is South German, adapted by Tielke (unique case); next-to-top peg hole not original.
