Comments:
Hellwig 2011, TieWV 166; Hellwig 1980, no. 032 (not seen by him). 2-piece table with double purfling and C-holes that don’t match Tielke’s in size or proportions, may be later French work; 2-piece back (arched and bent) with glued-on carved ornaments at top and bottom. Head, neck, fingerboard, and tailpiece not original. Date c. 1718. Dimensions 71.5, 31.6/23.3/39.5, 12.0, -. (Has cello neck; not set up when seen by TGM.) Not mentioned in Traficante 1973. Tourin/Hellwig dimensions 70.8, 31.4/23.3/39.8, -, - (from Library); Monical dimensions 71.5, 31.6/23.4/39.5, 11.9, -. Ink inscription on main back brace: Wm. Harper ------ April 22nd 1816. Hellwig 2011 adds: 3-piece table (?); no purfling on back. Back widths 31.5/23.5/39.8. GH gave no reasons for dating it c. 1685; now redated much later, based on stylistic similarity of back ornaments to TieWV 167, whose table has been dated by dendrochronology to no earlier than 1718, thus perhaps by J.H. Goldt, which could also explain aytpical C-holes here.
