Comments:
Martius JCH 28. Converted to a cello. Table with single purfling and ebony edging, medium arching with nice recurve; bass bar perhaps old. Back with very wide soundpost plate and 3 crossbars, not original. Wide corner blocks. Label type suggests date of 1730-31, but probably built a few years earlier. Scroll and grafted pegbox probably early 19th-C., neck more recent, perhaps documented by pencil inscriptions on inside of table and back: “Talinn / A. Puwel / 1925”. String length 67.0-68.5. Museum’s dimensions 69.4, 31.1/22.7/38.3, 12.5, 67.5-68.5.
