Comments:
Modified to a cello, probably in late 19C. Museum dimensions 68.6, 32.4/23.7/38.5, 12.1. In poor condition: severe worm damage, also cracks, missing pieces (including fingerboard), and open joints. 5-piece table with rosette, 2-piece back. Linen linings, no corner blocks. Moens 1994 attributes this viol to Pieter Rombouts (step-son and pupil of Jacobs). Museum’s website: “made by an unknown maker in London, England, about 1690,” with a reproduction Jacobs label; many indications of English origin, including body proportions and arching geometry, 5-piece table, double purfling plus geometric decorations [= inlaid diamond patterns at corners of table and back plus along center joint of back], and mitered body corners. Unusual in having fragments of 2 back crossbars, held by vertical lining cleats. “Naive lion head.”
