2-piece (?) table with clear recurve; 2-piece back; both with narrow purfling. Neck has rounded profile, barely long enough for 7 frets, and is sharply angled back, with ribs cut obliquely; neck heel and top block connected by a wooden pin, visible at both ends. Pegbox has fluted back and clear graft to neck, probably also to head. Fingerboard and tailpiece of solid ebony; hookbar very thick, wide, and high (and drilled for an endpin). Bridge by “Vidoudez Geneve” appears designed to accomodate sympathetic strings. Back has two crossbars in addition to soundpost plate, with wood linings at center joint, fold, and perimeter. Varnish rather worn in many places and scratched on upper treble rib. Since late 1970s, played by Philippe Mermoud, professor at Geneva Conservatory. Monogram of superimposed M and J on back at neck heel (C. Scholz: ex-coll. King Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria [1Q19C]; Tourin: from Bavarian Royal Collections). Printed sticker “Inv. No. / 2” in middle of soundpost plate, beyond maker’s label.
