Comments:

Hellwig 2011, TieWV 087; Hellwig 1980, no. 077 (not seen by him; info from owner). 2-piece table with sickle-shaped soundholes, double purfling, and original bass bar (set at an angle, with horizontal growth rings); 2-piece back (arched and bent). Neck, head, fingerboard, tailpiece, and pegs not original; unusually small body; dimensions 57.1, 26.7/20.3/33.6, 11.3, -. Had been converted to a child’s cello in 1853. Restored by Hartmut Münzberg, Tabeckendorf. Dimensions 57.2, 27.0/21.0/34.0, 11.4, 61.0. Hellwig 2011 adds: all interior fittings probably original except linings; neck heel partly original. Back widths 27.0/20.2/33.2. Purchased in Landshut in 1970 as a child’s cello. Smallest of all Tielke viols; probably not a unique tenor, rather one of half a dozen unusually small instruments, perhaps made for use at high pitch. (cf. M. Hoffmann, Leipzig 5478).
