Phillips 1976/01/22, lot 100
Large C holes; male head with mustache (not original). Fleming 2001: 3-piece table, double purfling front and back; extensive half-edging and repairs. Phillips 1976: “circa 1650, attributed to the School of Henry Jaye...the pierced scroll and neck circa 1900.” 2-piece back, 12 wrest pins in bottom rib for sympathetic strings. L. Robinson to TGM, 10/11: restored by John Topham in 1975-76, his first viol restoration, under supervision of Dietrich Kessler; DK and LR examined the label (”small, scrappy and handwritten”) under ultraviolet light, but could only read the date, 1649.
