Comments:
Museum gives date 1690-1710; website photo won’t print or download. Curator says found by Marco Pallis near Mittenwald in 1920s, then to Dolmetsch, who restored it; acquired by Peart in 1930s. Undated photo in Pallis 1978 shows it being played by Millicent Dolmetsch. Website of Australian viol maker Ian Watchorn offers for sale (as of 1/2010) his 1981 copy of this instrument, described as “unlabelled and of South German origin, late 17th century. It was found in Germany by Marco Pallis and restored by Arnold Dolmetsch for [his daughter] Cecile. Prof. Peart acquired [it] from the Dolmetsch family and brought it to Sydney with him when he took up the music chair at Sydney University,” which he held 1948-74 (he died in 1981). “The body resembles the work of the Munich makers Paulus Alletsee and his pupil Josef Paul Christa.”
