Comments:
Small gold fleurs-de-lys in 4 corners of table. Pegs and tailpiece not original. Repaired in 1884 by Gand & Bernardel frères: new fingerboard and tailpiece (ebony veneer with ivory inlay) (Gétreau 1996, p. 449). Tourin: Same [body] shape and C-hole placement as MFA bass; head carving cruder than MFA. Double purfling on front, none on back. No corner blocks or back braces except (wide) soundpost plate; linen lining at back fold, wood along center joint and edges of front and back. Top block appears original, with 2 nail holes. On table at neck (under fingerboard), 12 metal pins and small nut, as if for sympathetic strings. Neck graft shows at pegbox; butt of neck has been rounded. Topham 2003: irregular grain on 2-piece table; youngest growth ring is 1705 on bass side, 1704 on treble, both probably from same tree. Museum’s dimensions 69.5, 33.5/25.5/40.5, 13.6, - (probably taken on back).
