Comments:

Arched back with no fold, narrow body, wide fingerboard, large head. Gétreau 1996, p. 446: repaired in 1876 by Gand & Bernardel frères (new bridge, tailpiece shortened, ivory for peg heads); also repaired by Nézot. Lütgendorff calls this “eine fünfsaitige Viola” but in error; Chouquet correctly says 7 strings. 3 pegs treble, 4 bass side. (7th peg appears to have been added, so probably originally 6 strings.) Drescher says only surviving instrument by this maker, but both Lütgendorff and Vannes reproduce a label clearly dated 1746, presumably from somewhere else.
