Comments:

Otterstedt 1994: 5-piece table; changed to 7-string probably in 17th-C. France, perhaps by Colichon [Muthesius 1996, p. 43, disagrees]; back joint is off-center; neck carefully lengthened, widened, and fingerboard angle increased by inserting various pieces of wood, preserving original decoration of pegbox and neck foot (see drawing p. 152); new fingerboard and tailpiece, new bass bar set diagonally; body length 64.5 [sic?]. Drawing by Pierre Jacquier (1978) available from museum. Fleming 2001 gives date as 1627; 7-piece table with rosette; double purfling front and back; dimensions 62.7, 28.9/22.0/35.6, 11.7, -. On display 8/02: double purfling includes C-holes; pegs open-carved in center of heads; currently no strings, bridge, or tailpiece. Topham 2003: youngest growth ring of center stave is 1617 (for next on left, 1576; for next on right, 1502); no dendrochronological relationship between staves.
