Comments:
Martius 2003: dimensions 70.9, 30.6/23.8/42.4, 13.2, -; extra dimple in lower bout just below soundholes; arched back “mit wunderschöner, tief ausgearbeiteter Hohlkehle” and no fold; outline nearly identical to Höss 1709 (Deutsches Museum 34566), except that one’s upper corners aren’t pointed. Unclear if originally a viol: original top block is too narrow for 6 strings; but F. Hellwig’s 1980 restoration report states “Der Hals scheint eindeutig nicht zum Instrument zu gehören” [giving reasons]. Youngest growth ring on table is 1742 (tested by Peter Klein in 1983; both halves from same tree), so it’s probably contemporary with renecking—perhaps by Jais himself, c. 1750. [Montagu 1979: originally a bass viol, converted first into a small cello and then a fifth string added. Huber 1989: Fünf-saitiges Violoncello piccolo, umgebaute Viola da gamba. Not listed in Martius 1999 (viols at GNM). Focht 2006: “ein Hybridinstrument zwischen einem Violoncello und einer Baßgambe”.]
