Comments:

Overall square body shape with pointed corners, one dimple each in upper and lower bouts, left and right (likely not original); overhanging edges. Four-piece table with double purfling and glued-in bass bar (not original?); five-piece back, arched. Moens 1989: “the neck, belly, ribs and back do not belong together...parts of the body are...parts of one or more bass violins,” though belly is 16th-century [confirmed by dendrochonology]. Table and back do not match in arching or varnish. Fingerboard and neck foot have been narrowed. Martius & Moens 1988: originally a da braccio-family contrabass. Moens 1987: composite of old and new parts; assembled in early 19th C.? Moens 1986: neck and pebox don’t belong to body; body shows traces of changed outline; back probably newer than table and ribs. Martius 1999: Dendrochronology gives date of 1546 for youngest growth ring on table (also in Klein 2003). Drawings by Pierre Jacquier (1976) available from museum.
