Comments:
Pointed corners, overhanging edges. Large F-holes placed unusually high. Integral bass bar; no soundpost or corner blocks. Back and ribs of bird’s eye-maple. Unusually short neck, strangely attached to top block, which is not original. Probably significantly altered (cut down); called “Violoncello” in an early museum catalogue (1856). Restored 1965. Drawing by Aline Oberle (1976) available from museum. [www.rimab.ch dimensions: 70.5, 33.7/24.8/43.2, 14.6, 65.0]; Martius now feels that body outline has not necessarily been altered; other explanations are possible for observable evidence; 1609 inventory of Frauenkirche lists “sechs große Violn” AATTTB by Pergette; label is “heute über eine spätere Fugenverstärkung geleimt, und wurde demnach mindestens einmal abgelöst und wieder neu eingeleimt. [...] Die Frage der originalen Saiten-Anzahl und der Mensur kann ... nicht eindeutig beantwortet werden.” Focht 2006, p. 102: Baßgeige oder Baßgambe.
