Comments:

Neumann: Original neck, red varnish, fingerboard and tailpiece inlaid with ebony and ivory and mother of pearl (along edges and down the middle of each, with oval plaque at bridge end of each). Attributed to Gian Antonio Marchi, with date of c. 1720, in an Emil Herrmann certificate; but Marchi now known to have lived 1727-1807, active in Bologna from c. 1755. Dimensions 66.0, 31.4/23.5/40.0, 12.2, 72.4 (converted from inches). Pringle (after restoration 12/14): 2-piece table and back, latter with 2 narrow wings on lower bout; both with 2 lines of incised and inked “purfling” (single around soundholes) and fine grain/narrow flame. Original neck and pegbox with fluted back and square heel; fingerboard and tailpiece have ebony veneer and edges, with 3 double lines of bone strips enclosing alternating bone lozenges and pearl diamonds (along edges and down center); fingerboard has engraved pearl oval with coat of arms, tailpiece similar with laurel wreath and central rays. Half-height hookbar replacing endbutton; bottom block not original, but top block (and bass bar) may be. Back thin (< 3 mm) but heavily braced in earlier restoration; table with many repaired cracks and some worm damage; toothed plane marks on inside surfaces of back and ribs. (Back widths 31.9/21.9/40.0). TGM 1/16 adds: long neck, with 7th fret nowhere near neck heel; table and back slightly overhang ribs; dimensions 67.4, 31.6/21.8/39.4 (32.0/22.0/40.2), 12.1, 71.5; string length with bridge above middle of C-holes.
