Comments:
Harwood/Meucci 1999, added footnote on p. 157: only fragments of the instrument survived the bombardment of July 1943, but this includes the label. Bonizzoni et al. 2014: scientific analysis of varnish, glue, purfling, and paint help to identify original materials and structural modifications. Painted decorations on pegs and back of pegbox; geometric inlay at top and bottom of back. Conference paper by several co-authors (Oxford, July 2013, reported in Lorigan 2013) summarizes conclusions: table not original, nor is varnish; had been converted for use as a cello, but most of structure was original prior to 1943. Grappello documented as a maestro da istromenti in Ferrara in 1566.
