Comments:
Muthesius 1996, no. 2: body of mahogany: 5-piece table, 1-piece back; neck not original (converted to a cello in 18th C. and remains so), but head is. Fingerboard and tailpiece probably original, but narrowed. Tailpiece ebony with silver inlays. Dimensions from Muthesius; Gatti gives 66.7, 30.9/22.2/39.2, 13.2, 62.5 [NB: Body lengths and widths taken on back]. Gatti 1997: body and head of mahogany. 1-piece back; top block integral with neck; no corner blocks. Back linings of cloth, table linings of same wood as the instrument. Back fold reinforced with parchment from a liturgical chant book (similar to that found in V. Ghielmi’s Collichon of 1688). Purfling only on table. Varnish almost entirely original. Converted to cello at unknown time, replacing upper half of neck and pegbox but keeping original head. Original tailpiece with seven plugged holes, now narrowed. Mackey 2012: “mahogany” is really Cedrela odorata, or Spanish cedar.Gallini 1963 dimensions: 68, -/-/38, 13.5, -.
