Comments:

Gatti 1997 [NB: Body lengths and widths taken on back]: table is mid-18C, head is 2H19C. 1-piece back, very arched. Sharply angled neck. Probably first converted from viol to guitar (clear traces of guitar bridge on table), then to large 4-stringed viola. Soundholes are backwards Cs, now with only top eyes, extremely wide below (presumably damaged). Bad worm damage to ribs. Back has diamond inlays at top and bottom. Gallini 1963: “È uno stupendo esemplare di viola da gamba soprano [sic] di Antonius Bononiensis”; dimensions 47.4, 23/-/27.6, 7.6, -. Ferrari 1991: table not original: practically flat (un-arched), with traces of earlier guitar/lute-type attached bridge (with moustaches); no linings (unlike back) and unusually-shaped C-holes have only upper eyes. Top of back has been altered to accomodate new neck, which is too narrow for 6 strings; pegbox ends with a shield instead of scroll or head. Dimensions 47, 23/17/27, 7.4, 47.
