Comments:
Gatti 1997 [NB: Body lengths and widths taken on back]: body shape strongly reminiscent of Bertrand. 2-piece back and ribs of bird’s-eye maple; 2-piece table with double purfling (outer track missing in some places, probably due to reshaping to fit ribs. Top block, wooden linings, and back cross-bars not original. Converted to cello in 2H19C, with new neck and head with open scroll. Many cracks, especially on table, and substitute pieces of wood on ribs and back; revarnished. Gallini 1963 accepted it as by Maggini, based on label, calling it identical in every way to “Gasparo da Salo” at Victoria & Albert Museum (= VIC 6, by F. Hintz); dimensions 68.5, -/-/38.5, 13, -. Repair label: “Delfi Merlo - Liutaio Via Paris Bordone, 11 / Restaurò In Milano Il Maggio 1987 / Civiche Raccolte d’Arte”.
