Comments:
Neck and scroll not original; not attached to body, despite published photo. 5-piece table with rosette, 2-piece back, both with double purfling. Restored in 1935 by museum’s conservation department; soundpost plate removed and kept in separate box, in 2 pieces, with label in center. Fleming 2001: 7-piece table, double purfling front and back; dimensions 64.3, 30.8/23.2/37.1, 12.2, -. Major parts original but much damage. TGM: when seen, center joint of back wide open despite many interior cleats; also many other cracks in table and ribs. Back purfling outlines 4 quadrants. Very similar in appearance to Kessler’s “Rose” (rosette, soundholes, outline, arching, even dimensions), as pointed out privately by R. Rose (10/08 plus Edinburgh paper 6/00) and J. Pringle (1/09).
