Comments:
Martius JCH 33. Converted to cello (with Saxon scroll), then further modernized; neck, head, fingerboard, tailpiece, and bridge not original; body has been somewhat shortened in conversion to cello. Documentation from previous owner mentions two stages of repair (one, in or before 1928, for worm damage after length disuse, the other after some kind of accident), both by Willy Berthold Benkert of Zwickau. 2 of 3 crossbars on back are original; top and bottom blocks not original. Dendrochronology (by Micha Beuting) gives date of 1705 for youngest growth ring on table. Back widths 30.8/21.5/38.3. Museum dimensions 67.5, 31.5/22.5/38.0, 12.3, 62.0. Latest contemporaneously-dated instrument by J.C. Hoffmann.
