Comments:
Hellwig 2011, TieWV 058 (viola d’amore); Hellwig 1980, no. 053 (“viola d’amore (?)”). Hellwig 1980: table with sickle-shaped soundholes, single purfling, and original bass bar; back and ribs are palisander, the former flat with fold, in 9 pieces separated by ivory strips. Original neck; 2 pegs treble, 3 bass side (ivory); fingerboard veneered with palisander, tailpiece veneered with tortoiseshell and has central cutouts (2 hearts, 1 diamond) and 3 small ivory buttons, bridge end diagonal). Restored by G. Hellwig in 1951; dimensions 33.8, 15.3/10.7/19.4, 4.0, -. Köpp 2000 (p. 146 and n. 25): viola d’amore, with original tailpiece, having 5 metal pins to hold metal strings; likewise Köpp 2001. Hellwig 2011 adds: 2-piece table, 1-piece bottom rib; fingerboard probably not original; tailpiece sides sharply sculpted. Back widths 15.3/10.7/19.4. Very original condition, unusually fine craftsmanship of head and pegbox.
