Comments:
Loan 1904: “Formerly the property of Handel and presented by him to Mr. Bernard Granville, among whose collection of Handel manuscripts and relics it was sold at auction by Messrs. Puttick and Simpson in 1858.” Date of 1700 in square brackets, denoting an estimate. Loveless 1956: “Running through the middle of the back is a design of thin black lines. (...) “the grotesque head...resembles a shaggy eyebrowed lion, or...a dragon’s head.” Dimensions taken on back, in inches. Handwritten comments on database printout provided by H. Powley (1995): “Total pastiche cello/gamba mix. Repair labels by Chanot, London, 1925; Wurlitzer, New York, 1937; Pierce Music Co., Salt Lake City, 1959. Head could be 19th C.; neck and pegbox new, c. 1904. Overhanging sides. Converted to cello, then back to gamba; not a good instrument to start.”
