Comments:
Only two upper, no lower corners. Head (and pegbox) not original. Probably a small rather than bass-sized instrument, as Loan 1904 calls the latter “viola da gamba” and this, like other trebles and tenors, “viol”; date of 1565 in square brackets, denoting an estimate. Compare the “Lira-Viola by Gasparo da Salò, Brescia, 1561” at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Boyden 1969, no. 9; not in this database), which however has only two lower, no upper corners. Bertolotti’s dates are 1540-1609.
