Comments:

Hellwig 2011, TieWV 017; not in Hellwig 1980. 3-piece table with double purfling and probably original bass bar (horizontal growth rings); 2-piece back (flat with fold) with no purfling. Head, pegbox (with carved back), neck, and top block in one piece; peg for top string is closest to nut. Modified to a cello, narrowing neck but keeping pegbox (including 6 pegs) and head. Attribution to Tielke based on carvings at neck foot and on back of pegbox, as well as the head; dating based on TieWV 14 of 1677. Back widths 26.8/19.3/33.8. Earliest of half a dozen unusually small instruments, perhaps made for use at high pitch. Tourin: tenor, anonymous but “head like Tielke”; Torres dimensions 60.0, 28/21.5/31, 12, -.
