Comments:
Currently a lira da gamba; formerly converted to a cello: neck, pegbox, fingerboard and tailpiece are replacements. Almost certainly the same as FLOR 2: Coover 1981, p. 349, says that after Alessandro Kraus’s death “about 500 items were dispersed, most to the Musikhistorisches Museum Wilhelm Heyer in Cologne.” Very similar to LEIPB 48 (no. 783), also to ASHMOL 2 (Witten 1975: “nearly a duplicate”, esp. re: rosette, soundholes, ridges in table [Herzog’s “El Greco” style]); however, a large viola labeled “Ant. Brenzi Bologna Anno 1628” “has little in common with the gambas” (Witten). 3-shaped soundholes face inward (like ASHMOL 3, INNS 7 [Russo], and LEIPB 47 [Brensio, lira da gamba]).
