Comments:

Hellwig 2011, TieWV 146; Hellwig 1980, no. 128. 2-piece table and back (arched, badly warped), both with ivory edging and painted double “purfling”. Pegbox with open-carved back and ivory edging. Inlaid fingerboard and tailpiece (ivory on tortoiseshell veneer with ivory frame). Date c. 1708 [but see below]. “Reparé par / Simoutre Luthier / à Bâle” [stamped on soundpost plate]. Dimensions 68.4, 29.7/21.7/37.2, 12.7, 67.2. Klaus 1997: 2-piece table and back; dimensions as above. Hellwig 2011 adds: bass bar possibly original, snakewood hookbar perhaps also; pegs not original. Dimensions 68.5, 30.3/22.0/37.4, 12.7. 67.5; back widths 29.7/21.8/37.2. Nicolas Eugène Simoutre active in Basel 1858/59–1889/90. Fingerboard is reverse-color counterpart of TieWV 147. G. Hellwig suggested c. 1708, but similarity of marquetry to angélique TieWV 139, dated 1704, suggests several years earlier. Kirnbauer 2014: also repaired by Hermann Seyffahrt for use in concerts in 1902, played by Emil Braun; but no longer playable. Tourin dimensions 68.5, 30.3/22.0/37.4, 12.7, 67.5.
