Christie’s 2009/10/13, lot 169
Lachmann 1950 says handwritten label: Guillaume Barbey / fait a Paris 1719, but not inside instrument now; yet precisely such a label illustrated in Vannes. Striped perimeter of table, also fingerboard and tailpiece, which in addition have a line of small lozenges running down their center lines; rosette. When seen (1992), back was off, and no strings. Lachmann: back and sides of poplar, “ornamented with painted black lines of different width”; head shows a blindfolded woman. No frets in this photo, but 8 frets in Christie’s 2009, though still no strings or tailpiece; “ascribed” to Barbey. Not in Snoeck’s 1894 or 1903 catalogues, despite Lachmann’s statement of provenance.
