Comments:
Hellwig 2011, TieWV 077; Hellwig 1980, no. 068 (not seen by him: info from museum and Fritz Egger, Basel). 2-piece table with single purfling and sickle-shaped soundholes (with eyes at top and bottom added later); back and (unusually deep) ribs are striped (5 palisander and 4 maple in each case; outer two wider on ribs); body has been lengthened at upper end. Pegbox with open-carved back; neck narrowed and then widened, but length unaltered; fingerboard and tailpiece not original. Reconverted to a viol by Ignacio Fleta, Barcelona. 5-string disposition original (tuning D-G-c-e-a). Dimensions 70.0, 31.6/22.8/38.5, 14.4. -. Museum catalogue dimensions 122.0, 69.1, 31.0/21.9/37.8, 14.0, 64.5. Hellwig 2011 adds: large replacement piece on bass side of table; purfling probably originally double; back lightly arched. Back widths 30.5/22.4/38.3. Tailpiece with sculpted edges and 3 cut-outs modeled on viola d’amore TieWV 58, probably by Fleta, who probably also added eyes to soundholes. Rounded bottom of pegbox (both sides and back) unusual for a viol, more like Tielke’s d’amores.
