Comments:
Certificate from Hamma (Stuttgart) to Grieder, dated 1960, attributes it to “Josef Klotz, Mittenwald, um 1800,” adding lion head not original, but table, back, ribs, and varnish are. (Gives date of Stainer label as 1609, obviously impossible; photo from owner shows third digit is clearly 6, and fourth more likely 7 than 9.) Also evident from photos: overhanging edges; black fingerboard and tailpiece with white or blond edges; hookbar; dark pegs with large white pips. (Body length and widths from Hamma certificate; rib depth and string length from owner.) Dilworth 2012: Felix Grieder was a luthier (b. 1931, studied in Mittenwald, worked for Hug/Zurich, then from 1955 in own shop in Basel and for the conservatoire).
