Baines (and hence Tourin) called this a tenor. Fleming 2001: 2-piece table with single purfling, not original (probably 19th-C.); 5-piece striped back with several knots in light-colored stripes, and no purfling; neck and head new. Tourin “tiny scroll”; dimensions 41.8, 19.5/14.5/24.0, 6.0, 45.0. F. Baines, in Early Music 6 (1978), p. 45, states the second Jaye viol he acquired as “a small tenor from the Engel collection”: either this or BAINE 3. M. Levy to TGM 11/02: “irrecoverably cut down in every dimension”; original size probably very close to the 1667 Jaye treble (VIC 2). Seen but not measured, 8/03. Odd instrument overall: neck has suitable profile but angled back; tall bridge by E. Withers. Pegbox has small scroll, barely fluted back, collar at bottom, holes bushed. Shallow ribs of dark wood, but still too deep to play under chin. Pallis 1970: “When I first arrived [at Haslemere] Arnold Dolmetsch sold to me a fine example of a small tenor with a striped back.... [It] has since passed into the possession of the Jaye Consort...”: surely a reference to this viol? (Jaye probably died in 1636, per Fleming 2016.)
