Comments:
Fleming: 7-piece table (with double purfling), striped ribs, and neck not original; striped back, but only central 3 stripes (of 5), below fold, are original. Back was once folded at bottom as well as top end. Carved head surely by same hand as that of 1619 Jaye bass (KESSLR 1), but uncertain if original to this instrument. (Hayes 1930 says it’s “precisely similar in every respect” to head of Galpin’s 1611 Jaye bass [= LOAN 14].) Repair labels [per Fleming, pvt. comm.]: “G. Sa[i]nt Ge[orge] / [...]it / 1917 [or 1911]”; “Alec Hodsdon / Lavenham / 1932”; Michael Plant / Sheffield, 1979”. Replacement table made c. 1977 by Michael Plant (see The Viol no. 15 [2009], p. 22); this in turn replaced c. 2008 with one made by Richard Campbell (owner/player) under supervision of Jane Julier, who varnished it. Baines says (in Early Music 6 [1978], p. 45) his Jaye treble came “from the Galpin collection”; in undated letter to G. Lyman, says it’s “featured in Galpin’s book on musical instruments” (but isn’t that LOAN 3 / GAL 6, dated 1632?). Tourin’s dimensions 37.5, 18.4/13.0/19.0, 7.7, 36.0. (Jaye probably died in 1636, per Fleming 2016.)
