Comments:

Called “alto” in 1951 catalogue. Galpin 1910 says “the head is by a later hand” and shows a scroll. Galpin 1972 reports grandfather’s notebook says “neck & head of later date” with pencil addition “by Furber” [= perhaps John Furber, d. 1841?] and says he “has not been able to trace its later history” (since 1904); it did not go to Boston like several other viols that Galpin had loaned to the 1904 exhibition. (In 1951, had tailpiece with pattern of diamonds.) Possibly the same as BAINE 3?
