Comments:
Baines 1966, p. 18: “Belly, neck and fittings are replacements by Messrs Hill, c. 1900. Original head”; body length 54. Boyden 1969: “small bass (lyra) viol” (Tourin: bass); dimensions 58.7 [sic: including neck heel?], 25.3/18.0/32.3, 11.4, 59.1. 2-piece table by Hill & Sons, before 1900; also fingerboard and tailpiece, neck and pegs; pegbox and head original (notes to drawing by John Pringle [1978], on Hill & Sons letterhead, say old but not integral). Ribs and back of bird’s-eye maple, double purfling front and back. König 1985: dimensions 55.0, 26.2/18.5/31.8, 11.3, 58.5 (??). Fleming 2001: double purfling on front (not original) and back. Topham 2002: dates of youngest ring in table are 1863 (bass) and 1864 (treble); pieces probably from adjacent positions of the same tree. Fleming 2011: label seems original, but different handwriting from Paris Rose tenor. Back and ribs slab cut, with extensive decorations, “aesthetically sophisticated ... workmanship of the highest quality” though still not perfect. All interior fittings new; head originally painted and gilded, “has clearly had an earlier life on another instrument”; pegbox extensively decorated (foliage on sides, 16C-style abstract pattern on back).
